I love Zoe’s work. She’s combined 3 things I’m interested in (patchwork, ceramics and wabi sabi – the japanese idea that there is beauty in things that are imperfect) and the results are amazing! When I first saw her work I thought she’d decorated the shards of the broken ceramic and then pieced them back together. However, this is not the case. What she actually does is covers the broken pieces with fabric, and then sews the pieces back together by hand. Her pieces look so tactile, I want to stroke them through the screen. You’ll notice on some of the shards she add more decoration with stitch/thread in a contrasting colour, which I think really lifts her work. Again, it makes it more tactile. She’s based in Birmingham, and is available for commissions.
