Alexis Mabille

Alexis Mabille has worked for Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent before setting up his own house-brand. He’s originally from Lyon, studying at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne to gain the knowledge he needed to grow his passion for the fashion industry. He is an official member of the Fédération Française de la Couture, which in English is the ‘French Federation of Fashion and of Ready-to-Wear Couturiers and Fashion’; and has a large influence on the French fashion industry.

I like his work as, as you’ll find in some of the images below (all of which are pieces in his Autumn 2017 collection), his work draws influence from previous eras. This influence is then combined with a modern twist, of course. I particularly like the Elizabethan era gowns, being a former history student and lover of all things Tudors, and the modern twist on this classic style. The two dresses that are captioned as being Elizabethan-inspired below both use the traditional structure of Elizabethan fashion; but have more movement. What would have been a corset back in the 1500s is now a very tailored, geometric neckline and waistband that give the same effect and better. The skirts of the dresses are also altered, being a lot slimmer than would be tradition, but still with enough fabric and shape to make a statement. All of these factors are then combined with modern print, or lack of, and/or embellishments.

Also pictured are some of the other pieces from his Autumn 2017 collection that caught my eye.
