As an arts development officer, my role would be to represent my local council or an artist and their artwork. I would need to have budgeting skills, as I would be organising events (possibly in the community) that would be budgeted – and then of course I would need organisational skills. My time management and communication skills would also need to be good, as both of these skills would be important to this role
I would likely start my career at this level, but I could progress onto events management and general management. I would need a degree in an art related subject, and experience of working in the arts. I would also likely be employed by the government, and I could work anywhere.
If I decide this career is one I’d like to pursue, or you would like to pursue it; the places to find more information would be:
- Job advertisements. Any job advert will give a description of the job in question.
- Speak to arts development officers. Contact companies you know employ people in this role.
- Online. http://www.prospects.ac.uk is a really good site for giving you all of the information you need about a job.
